Great 3 Step Team Icebreaker

A good icebreaker can energize a team for a meeting or training session. This “City vs Countryside” team icebreaker will not only energize your team, but also build trust by helping them connect and learn more about one another.

It was actually the trip I am on now that inspired this team icebreaker exercise.

I live on a little island called Saint Simons. Today I have traveled to another island, Manhattan.  One interesting thing is the two islands are almost the same size (about 12-13 miles long), yet they are drastically different in many ways.  Saint Simons is much less populated and developed. The buildings can be no more than three stories high and there are lots of protected forests.  New York, however, is full of skyscrapers.  New York has 8 million people and Saint Simons only has 16 thousand.  I love both cities – they energize me in different ways.

The interesting thing is that everyone on your team may have a different opinion and experience! You can use this simple team icebreaker to kick off a meeting or training session and it works great for virtual teams too.

Instructions:

Simply ask one or more of these questions to learn more about your colleagues:

  1. Do you prefer a big city or somewhere rural with open spaces?  Why?
  2. Are you more energized in a big city or in a scenic countryside?  Why?
  3. Do you prefer to live in a big city, the suburbs, or the countryside?  Why?
