Online Meetings Using Mentimeter to Increase Engagement

Now that our new norm is online meetings, it is time to ramp up engagement. Polling apps provide a variety of colorful engagements that add energy and sizzle to your online meeting or training.

Most meeting platforms come with a basic polling option. Yet, polling apps are more robust, offering a multitude of visually interesting ways to gather input from the participants.

Some of the more popular polling apps are Mentimeter and Polling Everywhere. Personally, I have used Mentimeter in a variety of ways and find it very easy to set up and execute.

To use one of these apps, participants need to go to the app’s URL and type in a meeting code. Participants can join using their phones or they can open a new URL on their computer and join that way. As the presenter shares each new "poll", participants respond on their own devices and everyone sees the responses on the screen shared of the presenter.

Here are a few things you can do in these apps:

1. Word Clouds

Ask a question and participants type their short responses into their device to co-create a word cloud. The more often a word is used, the bigger it will be in the shared image on the presenter’s screen.

See the example below:

2. Quiz Competitions (includes scoring)

Quizzes allow for a fun competition. After each quiz question, the participants will see a Leaderboard and see who is winning.

3. Multiple Choice Questions (with interesting images or gifs)

Multiple choice questions are similar to traditional polls, but with Mentimeter you can easily add fun gifs to make it visually appealing.

4. Ranking

Ranking allows people to select their top preferences or choices.

5. Scales

Scales allow people to respond along a continuum.
